Love and Care vs. Toddler Rat Race

This week, the New York Times continued its trend of publishing on the bizarre trend of parents in the rat race in New York.  This time, the article is describing an new trend that fits with the Bugaboo envy, the post-modern $5,000 nursery filled with Dwell cartoonish patterns.

"In Manhattan, the brutally competitive nursery and kindergarten admissions process is leading many parents to sign up their toddlers for therapy. “Preschool admissions tests loom large,” said Margie Becker-Lewin, an occupational therapist on the Upper West Side. “In many cases, parents know there is nothing wrong with their child, but they feel caught in the middle.” "

I feel this pressure too as I fit the stats of being an older mom at 35. I am tempted by good marketing fueling my fears of being a good mom.  However, the reality is that love and care is all that truly matters for a healthy child.  I am trying to take a step back and focus on the basics: offering attention, play time with simple toys on the floor, paper, crayons, running and jumping up and down.

If my daughter stays behind the rat race, she will at least remember a fun and loving childhood.
